What a season it’s been for the squash teams at Stourbridge Lawn Tennis and Squash Club! Two League titles and possibly two cup finals on the horizon could make it a clean sweep winning everything we could do in Worcestershire Squash!
Worcestershire Squash Leagues
The 3rd Team won a title decider against Boughton Park 4-1 to clinch the Division 3 title by just 6 points! A credit to Captain Richard Andrews in his first (of hopefully many) seasons as a squash team captain and all of the players used throughout the season from young to old everyone played a part in making themselves available especially Beth Fisher (11 apps), Mark Biddle (15 apps) and Pete Bailey who played 10 and won 10 for the 3rds!
The 2nd Team had their first season in Division 1 and depending on how many teams want to come up from Division 2 may stay in the division despite our 1st Team regularly stealing their players. Apologies Simon! It has been a tough but hard fought season and the players I think have all seen improvements to their game competing against tougher opponents which can only be a good thing for them and the club! Saying this they are still in the hunt for some silverware with a semifinal coming up in the Worcestershire Plate semifinal.
The 1st Team retained their crown at the top of Worcestershire Squash winning the Division 1 title by just 2 points over Stourport who pushed them all the way. 16 different players represented the club at the top level with Ben Quinn (4), Andy Speake (6) and Jack Bennett (6) all with a 100% win record for the team (Over 3 apps). Jack Dukes (9 wins out of 13) and Stuart Lord (13 wins out of 14) both the most appearances for the club out of a possible 14 matches! Again, the season is still not over with a semifinal in the Worcestershire Cup semifinal! This is the 3rd year on the bounce the 1st Team have won the league and with a possibly cup to go with for this year!
Warwickshire Squash League
The 2nd team in the Warwickshire league narrowly missed out on promotion to the 5th Division despite finishing the 2nd half of the season unbeaten which bodes well for the next Winter season where they will once again be gunning for promotion!
The 1st team finishing bang on mid table 5th out of 9 teams with 8 wins and 8 losses! There are no cups to play for in the Warwickshire League and both teams will be looking for promotion in both their respective Summer Leagues!
Looking ahead…
Both the 1st and 3rd Team have HOME MATCHES this Wednesday 2nd April! The 1st Team are against Malvern Active 1sts and the 2nds are against Stourport 2nd Team! It would be great to get as many of you down the club as possible to support our teams in what could be a momentous season in Worcestershire Squash matches start from around 7:30pm. The finals are being held at Stourport and will be on Wednesday 9th April a week later. Has a club ever won both cups and 2 league titles!?!
The Summer leagues will start up in May but in the meantime Monday nights will be continued for Team Practice and the courts have been booked for anyone interested in playing team squash to come down and get some competitive matches and/or training in! We are looking to put in 2 teams in both the Worcestershire and Warwickshire squash leagues. We are also looking at bringing back the Handicap Competition this Spring/Summer which is a great leveler - so keep our eyes peeled for sign up posters!!
Thanks to everyone for playing throughout the Winter season it really has been a cracking season for all with some very competitive matches! Also additional thanks to the team captains for their hard work and efforts in pulling together a team capable of competing week in week out! It’s great to see us have 3 teams in the leagues and being so competitive too!
